The Coalition Mont-Kaaikop aspires to create the Mont-Kaaikop Protected Area, consisting of the entire Kaaikop Mountain, the surrounding public lands and a biodiversity corridor from Mont-Tremblant to the proposed Forêt Ouareau Protected Area, passing through Mount Kaaikop and the Mohawk territory of Tioweroton (in Sainte-Lucie-des-Laurentides, Québec). To do this, the Coalition aims to raise funds to permanently protect this magnificent natural territory.

The Municipality of Sainte-Lucie-des-Laurentides supports the Coalition since its beginning. It won a first legal step against the Québec Government by obtaining an interlocutory injunction to stop significant logging planned at Mont-Kaaikop. The work was due to start in January 2014. Following popular pressure, in December 2015, the Ministry of Forest, Wildlife and Parks of Québec (the MFFP) officially removed planned forest cuts at Mount Kaaikop until a new public consultation is performed under the terms of the Sustainable Forest Development Act. Therefore, the interlocutory injonction was not renewed but the threat of logging on Kaaikop is still pending.

The Coalition does not militate against any logging . At the same time, we do not believe that all public land is conducive to logging.

The Coalition commissioned an independent expert firm to partly characterize Mont-Kaaikop . These data confirm what the Coalition has always believed: Mont-Kaaikop has exceptional forest ecosystems, some established and others in their initial stages . Faced with such evidence, the permanent protection of this exceptional territory has become an obligation.

the sinews of war !

The Coalition is asking for your financial support since the road leading to the permanent conservancy of Mont-Kaaikop should go through multiple steps and procedures that certainly can be costly.

Here is a summary of expected expenses:

 complete characterization at Kaaikop

 forums and consultation process

 administration and clerical work

The Coalition will propose in the first half of 2016 a draft for the comprehensive and permanent protection at Mont-Kaaikop. The document will be submitted to the public for individuals and interest groups to actively participate in the process of creating this conservation project.

All steps taken by the Coalition are made voluntarily and professionally. We will pursue our goal in the same spirit, but your generosity is absolutely vital to our success.
